How to Make Homemade Corn Tortillas from Scratch (Perfect for Tacos!)

You guys! Homemade tortillas = life!

As a Socal native - tacos are a way of life and I've been known to make them pretty regularly in the Arriola household. Usually, I would make a quick run to Trader Joe's and grab some tortillas and anything else I'm missing to throw something together (maybe some vegan cheese, black beans, and cilantro). Tacos are a favorite of mine because I can get creative with the leftovers or other ingredients I need to use up before they go bad.

One day I can across Bob's Red Mill Organic Masa Harina Corn Flour and was really curious how making my own tortillas could spruce things up - I never was quite satisfied with the premade ones from the stores -.they never quite tasted like the authentic taco spot we love so much.

They were AMAZING and surprisingly much easier then I thought to throw together. I ordered a Tortilla Press to help make the process a bit easier and now keep fresh tortillas in the fridge just about every week.

I can't wait for you to give them a try - have fun, get creative & ENJOY!

Homemade Corn Tortillas

Serves: 24 tortillas | Prep: 20 mins (80 including rest time) | Cook: 5 Mins | Ready: 105 Mins

Ingredients:

Bob's Red Mill Organic Masa Harina Corn Flour (2 cups)

Salt (1/2 tsp sea salt)

Water (1 1/2 - 2 cups warm water)

Tools:

8 Inch Aluminum Tortilla Press 🍳

Tablespoon Scoop 🍳

Rubber Spatula 🍳

Directions:

  1. In a large bowl, mix together Masa Harina & salt.

  2. Slowly mix in 1 1/2 - 2 cups of warm water to the masa.

  3. Mix in water until the texture of the dough is firm and springy - not sticky.

  4. Let dough rest for about an hour - covered with a dish towel - damped dish towel to keep the dough moist.

  5. Use a tablespoon scoop to separate an approx 2-inch sized ball of dough and roll into a ball using your palms.

  6. Press the ball of dough using your tortilla press (or heavy baking dish/rolling pin if you don't have a press) until dough is even and flattened into a tortilla - adjust the thickness to your preference.

  7. Heat a skillet on medium to medium-high heat and add a generous drop of oil. Cook tortilla for approx 30 seconds each side until dough firms and holds into shape.

Serve and enjoy!
